LATEST TRENDS
Retirement or Returnship?
Returnships have actually been around since 2008, when Goldman Sachs (which owns the trademark on the term!) introduced the idea. It allows individuals who have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time get new, relevant work experience. It’s a paid opportunity, which means competition for the very selective program is fierce.
Money covers the trend, and even millennial-focused Refinery29 reported in from the UK where employee ranking site Glassdoor triggered their coverage and provided this list of other companies that offer returnship plans including Siemens, Amazon, Capgemini, J.P. Morgan and Deloitte.
Mainstream Media and the 50+ Mindshare
The biggest of the mainstream media are looking at the 50+ market with series intended to inform and cash in on the Silver Tsunami. In the last 2 months we’ve seen series from the New York Times’ Seven Days to Retirement Challenge and The Washington Post’s Bold School: Approach Life After 50 with Curiosity and Enthusiasm. And then The Longevity Issue from the MIT Technology Review.
